Being a Young Woman in the Car Business

Homer Skelton Ford's Blog | Being a Young Woman in the Car Business

One thing I hear all the time is, "You don't see many young women selling cars."

The truth is... you really don't. And it's not because women can't do it. It's because this business isn't for everyone.

I'm 20 years old, and I work as a sales consultant at Homer Skelton Ford. Every day I meet people from all walks of life, and I've learned that earning someone's trust isn't always easy—especially when they see a young woman walking up to greet them.

There have been times when customers have looked right past me and asked to work with a man instead. Some assume I don't know enough because of my age. Others make up their minds before I've even had the chance to introduce myself.

Then there are the customers who come in frustrated or angry. Sometimes they speak to me in ways that I know they probably wouldn't appreciate if someone spoke to their own family that way. I don't know if that's how they communicate at home, but I do know that I'm there to help them, and I expect to be treated with basic respect.

Does it bother me sometimes? Of course. I'm human.

But one of the biggest lessons this job has taught me is that I can't let my emotions take over. Every customer is different. Some people are having a bad day. Some have had a bad experience at another dealership. Some are simply skeptical.

At the end of the day, my job is to listen, answer questions honestly, and help people find the right vehicle for their needs. I remind myself that every interaction is a chance to change someone's opinion—not just about me, but about young women in this industry.

I've also had the privilege of working with incredible customers who gave me a chance. They realized that knowledge, honesty, and customer service have nothing to do with age or gender. Those are the people who remind me why I love what I do.

This career has helped me grow thick skin, build confidence, and learn how to stay professional even in difficult situations. It has taught me that respect is earned through consistency, hard work, and showing up every day ready to help.

So if you've ever wondered why you don't see many young women selling cars, maybe it's because this career demands resilience. It takes confidence, patience, and the ability to keep going even when people underestimate you.

I'm proud to be one of the young women who chose this path.

And if you're looking for someone who will work hard for you, answer your questions honestly, and make buying a vehicle as easy as possible, I'd love the opportunity to earn your business.
